Reason for Existence

Dear Friends,

One of our prominent Reasons for Existence as a church includes being available to each other in times of crisis and transition. As you may know, Carter has been caring for his ailing (but tenacious) father for the past few years and was with him on Sunday morning as he passed away. Dan O. Via was a world class scholar and theologian and someone whose passionate insights impacted many of us. He taught theology and biblical studies at Wake Forest, Duke Divinity School and the University of Virginia and wrote many important books and articles, especially on the Parables of Jesus. And he was Carter’s father. A passing like this affects us all.

Many of you have asked if we are going to do something as a church: We are taking a collection to provide scholarship funds to help send young people to Kibera where Dr. Via has been a brilliant supporter of Carter’s work through Cross Cultural Thresholds. If you would like to contribute write a check to Talmadge Hill Church and make note in the memo line For Dan O. Via Fund and drop it in the plate over the next few Sundays or send it by mail.

The Memorial Service for Carter’s dad will be this Saturday morning at 10:00 at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville, VA. I know that Carter cherishes your prayers and your love. And, after all, this kind of support is really why we exist as a church at all.

I have been preparing  our worship service for Sunday and want to invite you to experience something of the Holy together.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday morning.
